Summer in the City: Safety, Arts & Food in August

A couple of days ago the graffiti and street art festival “Hands Off The Wall” left its mark in Munich Werksviertel. (BTW: We'll also have artists decorate some parts of our new Munich City Hostel!)

So what comes next in this crazy new buzzing area after graffiti and street art? The “Trachtival”, what else..?

“Tracht” is the name of the traditional costumes. The fair around the beautiful retro-style merry-go-round (see photo on top) will run almost all August and offers a colorful mix of traditional Munich customs, local and international food as well as a series of concerts – from Blaskapelle (traditional brass band) to unplugged pop-music and back.

Talking about Munich Werksviertel: Our new City Hostel Munich Werksviertel is coming together very nicely! We’ve just set our mark on the building and are on course for an opening in the early days of September. We will keep you posted, of course! In the meantime, our City Hostel Munich Hauptbahnhof has its doors wide open with its perfect integration to public transportation (also to Werksviertel, of course).

The “Trachtival” has a series of Covid safety measures like QR code registration, social distancing and you will have to wear a mask.

A full COVID-19 risk assessment on its event layout is something that is also promised by the…

London Craft Beer Festival

So, where safety measures, more than 100 world-class breweries from around the world and a couple of DJs meet, you can’t go wrong.

Even more so as the Festival explicitly stands for an open society like we do! From their official website: “We will not accept any form of discrimination on any grounds including, but not limited to, gender, sexuality, race, religion or belief, social class, health, age or disability.”

Props from our side!

The London Craft Beer Festival takes place 13th to 14th of August at Tobacco Dock London. This is not only a fabulous location, it’s also only a 10 minutes’ walk away from our Wombat's Hostel London!

A fun location will also wait for you at the…

Mozisziget August Outdoor Cinema in Budapest

Sports ground by day, cinema in the evening. What is it? Meet the venue of Mozisziget, at the Margitsziget Athletics Centre! From 7-22 August, the grassy pitch of the popular sport facility will be transformed into an open-air cinema in the evenings (8 PM) – 16 days out, 16 interesting films. Bring a blanket, pillow, snacks and drinks! All screenings are free!

This is not the usual Cineplex blockbuster program. You will be able to see selected movies in 16 original languages.

While on Mozisziget on the Danube island (just 2,5 km away from our Wombat's City Hostel Budapest) is kind of a picnic location, food is one of the main ingredients of another European film festival…

31st Film Festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz

This festival with a long history, traditionally is also a culinary event offering delicacies from around the world.

Sausages, Kaiserschmarrn and sweet dumplings or curries, bowls and calamari, American steaks, burgers, Greek pitas and Japanese teppanyaki – you name it, the treats are all there, freshly prepared waiting for you. Of course there is also a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes.

And the films? From opera highlights such as La Traviata, Così fan tutte and Il Trovatore to pop greats like David Bowie, Shakira and Mariah Carey, the film festival contains both new recordings as well as several gems from the last two decades. A colourful mix of dance, jazz, world music, classical and musicals rounds out the diverse 2021 programme.

From our City Hostel Vienna Naschmarkt, the Rathausplatz is easily reached via public transportation (just ask at the reception, we’ll be happy to advise) but we would recommend a 20 minutes’ walk on the Ringstraße, the circular grand boulevard around the city center, to get there.

Enjoy your August in the city!
