Wachau Valley

One hour west of Vienna, between the small towns of Melk & Krems, is one of the nicest parts of the Danube valley with vineyards, castles, monasteries and enchanting villages, called the Wachau. Most noteworthy is the medieval village of Dürnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in a castle on a steep hill after his return from a crusade. The Wachau produces Austria’s finest white wine and homey Heurigen to taste them are plentiful everywhere.

Eisenstadt & Neusiedler See

Buses to Eisenstadt (1 hour) leave from Südbahnhof. Josef Haydn lived (and is buried) there – you can visit the HaydnMuseum in his former residence and there is also a concert hall dedicated to him in the baroque Schloss Esterházy. From Domplatz, you can catch a bus to the picturesque small town of Rust (40 minutes) on the shore of Lake Neusiedl – most of it is a national park (Europe’s only steppe lake). Rust produces outstanding red wine which can be tasted in many Buschenschanken (wine taverns). Lake Neusiedl is also really famous for water sports and other sport activities.

No other European capitals are as close as Vienna and Bratislava. The “Twin City Liner” speedboats leave at Schwedenplatz and do the trip in 75 minutes (EUR 16–30 one way).
