Travel & Sustainability: It Doesn’t Have to Cost the Earth
From carbon offsets to reusable water bottles, we’re all looking for ways to travel the planet while protecting it. However, it’s important to remember: where you stay can also make a difference.
Here’s why hostels aren’t just budget-friendly, some of their features can also help reduce resource use:
1. Shared rooms = shared resources
Whether it’s heating, lighting or cooling, sharing a room means these resources are shared between several guests rather than used by each guest individually.
2. Water saving measures
At Wombat’s, we use water-saving systems in our bathrooms. And who takes a 30-minute shower when fellow travellers are waiting for their turn…? ;-)
3. Guest kitchens
Shared meals can help reduce food waste and packaging. At Wombat’s, anything left over from breakfast that’s still untouched goes to the guest kitchen for everyone to enjoy. And, of course, guests are also invited to leave packaged food and ingredients for others.
4. Prime locations = less need for transportation
The more you can explore a city on foot or by public transport, the less you need to rely on private or motorised transport. And honestly? Cities are better experienced on foot anyway.
What Else Is Wombat's Doing?
- Partnerships with climate protection projects through myclimate, giving guests the option to contribute to certified initiatives.
- Measures to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
- Working with local suppliers wherever possible to support local businesses and reduce transport distances.
And finally, here’s a list of ideas that any traveller can use. Please give it up for…
… The Countdown of Our Top 10 Sustainable Travel Hacks
10. Choose direct flights when possible. Takeoffs and landings use the most fuel.
9. Bring a reusable water bottle. You’ll save money and reduce plastic waste.
8. Use recycling bins properly. This helps minimize waste.

5. Cook with fellow travellers in the guest kitchen. Save waste and make friends!
4. Don’t eat meat every day. We always offer vegetarian options too.
3. Turn off lights and Fan/AC when you leave your room.
2. Take trains instead of short-haul flights whenever possible. Especially in Europe, everything is closer than you think.
1. Be mindful of your consumption – whether it’s food, transport, or shopping. Awareness helps you appreciate more and waste less.
