The Best Cold-Season Experiences in Wombat’s Cities

travel tips

Here's to a great start into 2026!

Not sure what to do after the festive season? No worries—we've collected some of the best winter experiences happening well into February and March.

Vienna: Culture, Coffee, and Cozy Winter Magic

  • Ice skating at Wiener Eistraum – a unique winter wonderland in the very heart of the city, right in front of Vienna City Hall (11 January – 8 March 2026).
  • Explore the UNESCO-listed Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn, one of Europe’s best-preserved Baroque ensembles, wrapped in off-season winter atmosphere.
  • Warm up in a legendary Viennese coffeehouse (you can even get a taste of it in-house, in our WomCAFÉ ;-) )

Munich: Urban Winter Fairy Tale

  • Nymphenburg Palace canal often freezes over in winter and turns into a lively playground for ice skatering, curling, and even a bit of casual ice hockey.
  • Surfing in Munich? What else. The famous Eisbachwelle at the southern end of English Garden attracts surfers year-round – and if it gets too chilly there are also indoor surf spots.
  • Stroll along the Isar riverbanks wrapped in winter mist and enjoy peaceful walks in the English Garden. Munich’s many museums and traditional beer halls make for perfect warm-up (and chill-out!) stops on cold days.

London: Winter Vibes in the World’s Coolest Metropolis

  • Enjoy a magical ice skating experience beneath a glass roof, surrounded by some of London’s tallest skyscrapers: Canary Wharf Ice Rink in East London is open until 22 February 2026.
  • London Theatre Shows are even more perfect on cold evenings – from West End classics like “Les Misérables” to “Paddington” and the spectacular “ABBA Voyage”.
  • Explore galleries and museums like the world-famous Tate Galleries (Tate Britain: “Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals”, Tate Modern: “Theatre Picasso”, both until 12 April 2026).

Budapest: Europe’s Spa Capital (Especially in Winter!)

  • Soak in thermal baths under the winter sky —Széchenyi is magical in cold weather. Enjoy a bath party (“Sparty) or treat yourself to a “hot stone winter dream massage”.
  • Skate on Europe’s largest outdoor ice rink in City Park (12,000 square meters, open until end of February 2026).
  • Take in winter river views along the Danube or, if you prefer the livelier experience, hop on one of Budapest’s legendary party boats.

Leipzig: Culture & Relaxed Urban Cool

  • Ice skating, curling and delicious food on Augustusplatz: Leipzig Ice Dream, takes place from 17 January 2026 to 2 March 2026.
  • The Leipzig Zoo is a year-round must-see, with “Magical Tropical Lights” events in January and February 2026.
  • Discover art in galleries, cafés, and indie shops in the creative districts. (Pop-up exhibition "House of Banksy - An Unauthorized Exhibition" extended until 25 January 2026).

Winter doesn’t slow Europe down — it simply changes the rhythm. Whether you’re skating under city lights, warming up in a café or spa, or discovering culture without the summer crowds, Wombat’s cities prove that winter is one of the best times to travel.
