Travel & Sustainability: It Doesn’t Have to Cost the Earth
From carbon offsets to reusable water bottles, we’re all looking for ways to travel the planet while protecting it. However, it’s important to remember: where you stay matters just as much as how you get there.
Here’s why hostels aren’t just budget-friendly, they’re one of the most sustainable accommodation options out there:
1. Shared rooms = less energy per person
Whether it’s heating, lighting, or cooling: the more people share a room, the better the energy efficiency.
2. Lower water usage
Apart from Wombat’s smart water-saving systems in all bathrooms – who takes a 30-minute shower when fellow travellers are waiting for their turn…? ;-)
3. Guest kitchens
Shared meals mean less food waste and less packaging. At Wombat’s, anything left over from breakfast that’s still untouched goes to the guest kitchen for everyone to enjoy. And, of course, also guests are invited to leave (packaged) food and ingredients for others.
4. Prime locations = less transportation
Every ride you don’t take is carbon you don’t emit. And honestly? Cities are better experienced on foot anyway.
Wombat’s City Hostels has taken a few additional steps to dial up the sustainability factor:
- Partnerships with climate protection projects through myclimate, with options for guests to contribute to certified initiatives.
- No single-use plastics.
- Collaboration with local suppliers to support communities and reduce transport emissions.
And finally, here’s a list of ideas that any traveller can use. Please give it up for…
… The Countdown of Our Top 10 Sustainable Travel Hacks
10. Choose direct flights when possible. Takeoffs and landings use the most fuel.
9. Bring a reusable water bottle. You’ll save money and reduce plastic waste.
8. Use recycling bins properly. This helps minimize waste.
7. Use refillable toiletry containers. Travel-size often means “tiny and overpriced”.
6. Pack light; it makes travel more stylish ;-) and reduces transport emissions.
5. Cook with fellow travellers in the guest kitchen. Save waste and make friends!
4. Don’t eat meat every day. We always offer vegetarian options too.
3. Turn off lights and Fan/AC when you leave your room.
2. Take trains instead of short-haul flights whenever possible. Especially in Europe, everything is closer than you think.
1. Be mindful of your consumption – whether it’s food, transport, or shopping. Awareness helps you appreciate more and waste less.
