Celebrate International Wombat Day with Wombat’s City Hostels!
October 22 marks International Wombat Day — the perfect occasion to celebrate our furry namesakes! So give it up for these chubby Australian creatures: social, friendly, and always up for a good time (sounds familiar, right? ;-))
How to celebrate Wombats Day? One of the "official" tips is: Go to the zoo! So we’ve rounded up some animal-loving adventures you can enjoy near each of our Wombat’s cities. Because sometimes, a trip to the zoo or an animal park is exactly what you need to reconnect with your inner wombat.
🐼 Vienna: Schönbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten Schönbrunn)
Right next to the world-famous Schönbrunn Palace lies the oldest zoo in the world, Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Founded in 1752, it’s home to over 500 species — from giant pandas, elephants, and lions to giant tortoises in their own desert house. It’s a true paradise for animal lovers. Aaand: It’s just a quick U4 metro ride from Wombat’s City Hostel Vienna!
👉 Pro Tip: Visit in the morning to catch feeding time (see feeding schedule) — and enjoy a stroll through other parts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Gardens afterward!
🐻❄️ Munich: Hellabrunn Zoo
Set right on the banks of the Isar River, Hellabrunn Zoo is one of Europe’s first “geo-zoos,” grouping animals by continent. Expect everything from polar bears and penguins to the occasional cheeky meerkat. It’s a peaceful escape and easily accessible by public transport from both Wombat’s City Hostel Munich Hauptbahnhof and Wombat’s City Hostel Munich Werksviertel.
👉 Pro Tip: Combine your visit with a walk or bike ride along the Isar — a favorite local pastime!
🐍 London Zoo
Nestled in Regent’s Park, London Zoo is a historic and innovative wildlife haven. You’ll find Humboldt penguins, Sumatran tigers, Western lowland gorillas, and more. The zoo is part of ZSL (Zoological Society of London), a global wildlife conservation charity. From Wombat’s City Hostel London, it’s an easy tube ride (Hammersmith or Circle line) plus a few stops by bus (88 or 274).
👉 Fun Fact: The famous scene in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone where Harry speaks to a snake was filmed in the zoo’s legendary Reptile House!
🦋 Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden
Located right next to Heroes’ Square and Széchenyi Thermal Bath, Budapest Zoo is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. The Art Nouveau architecture alone is worth a visit — not to mention the 8,000 animals, the Palm House, and its tropical butterfly garden. It’s just a short ride on the historic M1 metro line from Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest.
👉 Pro Tip: After your zoo adventure, relax in the magical atmosphere of the Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Spa — just a short stroll away.
🐯 Leipzig Zoo
Leipzig’s zoo is a true gem — and only a short walk from Wombat’s City Hostel Leipzig. Famous for its Gondwanaland tropical hall, it features lush rainforests, waterfalls, and free-roaming animals under a massive glass dome. This covered area (larger than two football pitches) is home to almost 170 exotic animal species and about 500 different plant species.
👉 Pro Tip: Take a boat ride on the River Gamanile through Gondwanaland for an unforgettable view of this unique ecosystem.
