Picasso: Peace and Freedom / 27.09.2010
The exhibition "Picasso: Peace and Freedom" looks at Picasso's presentation of war and peace in the works he created during the Cold War. Picasso was a committed member of the Communist party from 1944 until his death in 1973. His work from this time reflects his deep political and social interest. For example, he designed the white dove for the World Peace Congress in 1949. It remains a global symbol against violence to this day - and can also be seen in the Albertina.
On show are more than 200 of Picasso's paintings, which he created between 1944 and 1973, including "The Charnel House", the "Massacre in Korea", "War" and "Peace", "The Rape of the Sabine Women" and a series of still-lifes with animal and human skulls. The works are supplemented with political printed matter of the day and biographical texts, such as letters and archive documents.
