Post-Oil City - Exhibition / 28.01.2011
Back to the future, or how we can find the roots of our future in the past utopias of the 1960s and '70ies.
After its success in Berlin and Stuttgart, Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts hosts this teasing and fascinating exhibition - the exhibition hall, a former theater scenery depot (the Semper Depot), being an eye-catcher for itself (at free entrance).
The city, after oil ran out, is something most of us will still experience - to form the way leading there will fill our lifelines. Already as far back as 1755 (Lisbon earthquake) we started to look at our impact on nature. The concepts of sustainability, city-gardening, alternative travel, building and habitation were ideas of the past. But as seen in todays projects of high-tech, energy-autarkic cities like Masdar (Abu Dhabi), or the low-tech model of rural Ethiopia (NEST - New Energy Sustainable Town), those ideas bear the fruit for the future.
