Free Open-Air Popfest / 22.07.2012

From 26 to 29 July, Karsplatz is given over to pop: Fatima Spar and the folk music duo Attwenger open the third Vienna Popfest. This is followed by numerous concerts by musicians on the domestic scene - with free admission and in the heart of the city.

The Popfest opening on Thursday is introduced by Turkish-born singer Fatima Spar with her band "The Freedom Fries". Her style is a blend of Swing, Balkan Brass, Calypso and oriental music.

Then Attwenger strike up: the dialect music duo is noted for having its very own sound that enriches traditional folk music with elements from punk to hip-hop. Also at the opening, the Popfest presents the debut of the new musicians' collective Welle Wien with up-to-the minute, state-of-the-art pop.

On the special electronic evening, international electronic star Patrick Pulsinger welcomes guests such as G. Rizo, Wolfram and Elektro Guzzi to the stage.

Over the four festival days, look forward to around 50 exciting Austrian music projects in all colors and shades, which turn Karlsplatz into the Mecca of new Austrian pop music. Amongst the other acts: Amadeus award winner M815, the Vienna song reinterpreters 5/8erl in Ehr'n, and many more.

The open-air festival of Viennese pop music is held in front of the Baroque St. Charles' church, not far from the bastions of classical music - the Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein. The main stage is ironically called the "Seebühne" ("Lake Stage"), after the large, knee-deep stone pond located there. The Technical University, the Vienna Museum, the brut artists' house and the Kunsthalle project space are weatherproof institutions that accommodate a wealth of other concerts as well as pop discourse rooms.
