Museumsquartier
A popular hangout in summer, this spacious area consists of various museums, cafés and shops. Among them the Leopold Museum (Austrian art), a museum for contemporary art (Kunsthalle), one for modern art (MUMOK) and the Architekturmuseum Wien (Architectural Centre Vienna) with Autrian architecture of the 20th and 21st century. Interesting mix of architecture and lots of arty people.

Albertina
Located in an annex of the Hofburg, this museum boasts a truly remarkable collection of graphic art – it’s the world’s largest collection of Dürers, there are 70 Rembrandts and 150 of Schiele’s drawings as well as some by Leonardo da Vinci, Klimt, Picasso, Michelangelo … you name them, they’re all there. Since the museum can only display a fraction of the 50,000 pieces it owns, there’s a new theme every three months. Open daily 10:00 am – 6:00 pm (10:00 am – 9:00 pm on Wed), admission € 9.50.

Belvedere Palace
The summer residence of Prince Eugene is an illustrious creation of Baroque architecture. It was designed as a place of recreation, not for every-day use. The museums in the upper and lower palaces offer an excellent survey of Austrian art from the middle ages to the present day. In the Upper Belvedere you can see the world’s largest Gustav Klimt collection and works by Schiele, Kokoschka, Renoir and Monet.

Haus der Musik
Modern, interactive museum dedicated to sound and music. Visitors are invited to playfully make new discoveries – and music – and to actively participate in the museum’s exhibits. One room is dedicated to the great classical Viennese composers. Open daily 10:00 am – 10:00 pm, admission € 10.00, half price on Tuesday after 5:00 pm.

Kunsthaus
The extraordinary Hundertwasser building is worth the visit – there is also a permanent exhibition on his paintings. Apart from the fantastic architecture, they are the best address for lovers of photography and portrayals of all kinds. Nice little café attached. Museum für Völkerkunde
Also located in the Hofburg (entrance at Heldenplatz). The Museum for Ethnology is best known for its centrepiece – the feather crown once worn by Aztec Emperor Montezuma. The name means “ruling with furiousness” and the Mexicans are (rightfully) furious that the thing ended up in Vienna, of all places. Open Mon and Wed-Sun 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, admission € 5.00.

Named after a club of artists (Klimt was among them) who declared independence from the arty establishment in 1897. The building itself (finished only one year later) is a masterpiece itself.
