Döner Kebap

The famous giant skewer came to Berlin in the 70ies with immigrants from Turkey and quickly replaced Currywurst as Germany´s standard fast food item. We eat 300 tons of it – every single day! Originally made with spiced mutton and lamb, it also comes with veal and beef now, as well as with turkey (of course!) and chicken. Along with some onion, tomato, cucumber and yoghurt sauce (“mit alles”), pepper (“mit alles, scharf”), it´s put into a sliced flatbread (or rolled up with extra-thin pita – called Dürüm Döner), say “tesekkür” and wolf it down while you walk (avoid tailwinds if you have long hair).

Sun closed. This sausage stand under the elevated railway opened way back in 1930 and sets the official Currywurst benchmark. Granny Charlotte Konnopke, almost 100 years old, still helps to fizzle them.
