BORIS

Ahoi. I’ve been travelling all my life, born in Germany, then moved to Wales, back to Germany, then South Africa for 6 years. Currently in Austria, finished my Masters in Sports equipment technology and been a part of the wombats family for over 4 years now. When I first came to Vienna I stayed at the wombats for a while and it was a great stay. Now I try to return the favour J If I’m not sitting in the small cubicle behind the front desk, you’ll probably find me at the billards club “Köö”, just down the road from wombats or playing poker with my mates. I’m looking forward to welcoming you at wombats!!

JANE

Travel destination: Canada, Africa, Europe, South America, Middle East
Languages: German, English, French, Latin, hands and feet

About me:
German girl in vienna... or, how I fell in love with a whole city.

5 years ago my feet lead me to vienna for the very first time; after 2 weeks of staying (I intended to come for 3 days...) I drove home, packed my stuff and decided to live here for the next years. The people, the living history, culture, the enormous good coffee, ah... everything... I fell in love with this city.

Besides my job at the hostel I'm studying history at the University of Vienna. My hobbies are music, movies, literature, people, computers/IT, dreaming, thinking, travelling, speaking and to bounce....
Since my earliest days I travelled to different places all over the world (my parents were enthusiastic travellers... and I share that :-) I think that the experiences that I could make on these trips shaped my life and made me more open-minded and curious of the unknown.

Interested in people from different cultures and travelling, the job at wombats is one of the best I ever had. I really enjoy to explain and explore the city with people from all over the world; if you need some good recommendations, just visit me at the reception desk ;-)

MARIUS

This is me. I am working in the nightshift. Practically living a hamster life, active at night and sleeping the day away. When I am not spinning the wheel behind the reception you’ll find me studying hard for my biology studies … ahhh bullshit … there are some great bars and clubs in the city among the wombar of course.

I love football/soccer. Be it on TV, on the field, the Panini Collectors Album, at the table or the everlasting question of  “FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer?”.  And I hate olives. Those little, nasty, green things.

So if you’re not an olive I will be very happy to welcome you at the wombats. And if you are, pray that I don’t see you first.

TERESA

Hey you,

my name is Teresa and I started working @ wombar in June 2007. In winter my favourite thing to do is skiing in the fabulous Austrian Alps, in summer I just love to travel around… that’s also the reason why I like working here so much – you meet a lot of fun people from everywhere in the world. Hope to see you soon in our fantastic bar.

SARAH

Hi!

My name is Sarah. I am a Styrian, Anthropologist, Dancer, Vesperian and Wombatler in Vienna.

I enjoy living in Vienna because:It’s a beautiful capital with lots of opportunities, but at the same time it also has a privat character. It is not too big, so you can reach a lot of destinations by walking or by bike.

Places I like:

Museumsquarter: it’s very nice, especially during summer in the evenings. A lot of people come there just to hang out with friends. Also there is the Café Leopold, which often has really good music.

A good place to go out to is the Club Ost. It focuses on Balkan music, but there are all kinds of concerts.

You should also visit the Naschmarkt where there is a flee market every Saturday and a food market every day, except Sunday.

It is also nice to go a little outside of the city like to Schafberg or Kahlenberg (little hills). From there you have a nice viewpoint upon Vienna and there are also some “Heurige” (they serve traditional Austrian food)

In summer you can swim in small lakes, which are located in the suburbs of Vienna. Or you go to “Neue Donau” (underground 6) and enjoy swimming in the Donau.

All in all Vienna is a wonderful city and I hope you enjoy it!

RAPHAELA

litte,  prospective socialworker with a sunny attitude, if she starts laughing everybody will be "infected" for sure, she loves to talk (a lot and fast) and she simply enjoys her job at the wombar.

Hobbies: riding the bike through the city, so watch out - if she approaches you ( a jump to the side will save your life :) ) travelling, meeting people from all over the world, hanging out with friends etc. too much to write down so better visit her at to the wombar and ask her personally!!!

KERSTIN

Hi, my name is kerstin. i´m at wombats since april 2009. after 3months in spain, 3 months nyc and 2 weeks in thailand I settled in austria again.

My mission in life is to travel the whole world- for that matter I have a BIG world-wall paper in my room at home to plan my trips :) Besides travelling I love sports - not too much though ;) - and taking pictures! And I´m addicted to chocolate.... REALLY ...

In Vienna I love to go to the museums quarter on sunny days or to the Burggarten to chill. More locations I love going to are the Schikaneder, Kunsthalle Cafe, Halle Cafe, Cafe Drechsler, Deli on Naschmarket, das Möbel etc - the best ice cream in town you get at Bortolotti on Mariahilfer Straße (just a few steps away from the LOUNGE) and the best "Käsespätzle" you get at Kaiserwalzerbräu in Esterhazygasse.

Nothing more to say about me - so, just give me chocolate and I´ll give you a smile ;D

My favourite places in Vienna :

During the day the parcs and the nature surrounding the city:
Vienna is a very green city if you go a bit outside the center and not so far away, easy by transports(trams bus and ubahn):

  - The castle and the big garden of SCHÖNBRUNN and the Zoo of Vienna ( beautiful place to have a walk, a rest and enjoy the good weather)
  - DONAU INSEL, a long island full of trees, lawns, beach volley grounds and skate parcs, in the middle of the danube and the new danube.
  - ALTER DONAU and the danube parc.
  - LAINZER TIERGARTEN in the south west part of Vienna. Beautiful forest and prairies on small hills where to have a walk and see wild animals.
  - The hills in the north in the 19th district : COBENZL and KAHLENBERG where you have the best views of the whole city and where you can find lots of HEURIGER, one of my favourite places for drinking cheap and good white wine and eating in a traditional austrian way. You definitely have to do that !!!!!!!

During the night,
Vienna has a good alternative indie scene. I'm more into indie alternative rock music :

- On the Gürtel arcades not far from the hostel where the line U6 goes, from ALSER STRASSE station to THALIASTRASSE, Rock indie bars with concerts most of the time: B 72, RHIZ, CHELSEA, LOOP, and VENSTER 99 for good electro and drum n base.
- BADESCHIFF a boat on the danube canal (U4 U1 schwedenplatz)
- FLEX
- FLUC
- ARENA
- BRICKS Lazy Dancebar, on tuesday and wednesdays
- DONAU BAR behind the Museum Quartier
- TÜWI, close to the türkenschanzpark.
- LA BOULE cafe bar billard, every monday with a big screen of drinks stock exchange and cheap prices.
- DEEWAN where you can eat vegetarian food and kind of govinda for students and for free prices (you give as much as money you want).

ENJOY YOUR STAY IN WIEN ;)

ALEKS

Do you make up plans or let it flow?

Helping your luck or believing in destiny?

Watching “The Simpsons” or watching the news?

Joining this wonderful ska festival and failing an exam at university or missing the gigs and having regrets?

Those are only some questions I ask myself over and over. BUT what I know for sure is that it is a great idea to stay at wombats "The Lounge"!

If you come to the womBar just ask me what you are looking for in Wien. May it be where you have the most stunning view over Vienna or want to know what “Mei Bia is net deppat” stands for ;-)

Hope to see you soon!

peace out
Aleks

BERNHARD

Hey, my name is Bernhard and my job is to make you feel comfortable (especially with lots of alcohol J ). I’m one of the bartenders in our wonderful wombats lounge bar. I love to meet people from everywhere just to hear what life is like in other parts of the world. Besides my job at the wombats I’m studying sociology and work hard on my PhD thesis. I traveled a lot and like to share my experiences with other backpackers. The best place to discuss every kind of topics at 3 o’clock in the morning (after we closed the bar) is the Mozart Stüberl just around the corner. So if you see me there, feel free to come over to have a chat (and maybe to invite me for a beer ;) ).

Cheers

LENA

My history with wombat's is quite a long one already! I leave and come back like so many of the guests I met during their stays in Vienna, Berlin or Munich. Apart from taking smaller trips to the lovely cities of Europe, I spent half a year travelling in Central America. Two years of living and working in Spain brought my knowledge of the Spanish language to a satisfying level to come back to a Vienna that is changing and growing and thus more interesting than ever!

Come and see!
