Each year, the Viennale shows around 130 current, evening-filling drama and documentary films, which can often not be seen in local cinemas outside of the festival. Then there are the numerous short films. On the program this year are films by well-known directors, including Nanni Moretti, Aki Kaurismäki, Lars von Trier and Todd Haynes. Unknown cinematic discoveries can also be found. In particular, there are exciting and unusual works from Argentina and Romania.

The Viennale presents a tribute in honor of Harry Belafonte, who is known not only for being a singer, but also a great character actor. This is proven by his collaboration on films by directors such as Robert Altman or Sidney Poitier. Harry Belafonte is coming to Vienna in person for his tribute. Attention is also turned to the independent and headstrong producer Jeremy Thomas from England.

The film museum is showing a series of works by Belgian-French director Chantal Akerman at the Viennale. What's more, almost half of the program is made up of documentary films. The Viennale is the annual showcase for popular parties and premieres. The festival headquarters this year are again at the hip Badeschiff on the Danube Canal
