The beautiful gardens of Schönbrunn are definitely recommendable, the Gloriette is a small palace with a nice café. It is situated on a hill in the park and you have a magnificent view over Vienna from there.
Furthermore, you find a zoo (the oldest one worldwide!!), a labyrinth, an exotic palm house and the rebuilt “Roman ruins” from the epoch of the Emperors in the park.
You can also have a guided tour of the palace itself, but as this tour is pretty expensive, we wouldn´t really recommend it.

11:15 am

In front of Schönbrunn Palace and next to the concrete river, you will find the metro. Just take the metro line U4 (direction Heiligenstadt) and hop off at the stop “Karlsplatz”.

11:30 am

Go to the exit “Technische Universität” and find yourself in the middle of Karlsplatz. Cross the park and you can take a look at Karlskirche, a church which was built in a Byzantinian style.
If you pass Karlskirche on its left-hand side, you´ll eventually come to the “Wiener Stadtmuseum” (Vienna City Museum). It´s not one of the major and most famous tourist sights, but it´s really interesting and informative; we would definitely recommend to take a look at it.

Now go back to Karlskirche, cross the square and head towards the inner city centre. You will soon reach the Ring directly in front of the State Opera House.

12:00 pm

From the State Opera House on, it´s definitely recommendable to take a stroll along Kärntnerstraße. Here you gonna find everything: from the stores of the most expensive and posh clothing chains to a nice snack at McDonald´s. In summer as well as in winter times, the street is full with street artists, living statutes and organ grinders. This mixture gives that part of Vienna a Mediterranean flair.
At the end of Kärntnerstraße, you will see St. Stephan´s Cathedral, the highest religious building in Vienna. We would recommend a tour of the cathedral, but even if you don´t have that much time, you should at least take a closer look at the exteriors of the cathedral.

12:45 pm

Adjacent to the cathedral on Stephansplatz, an ample road (it almost looks like a square) turns a bit into a northward direction. This is called the “Graben”, it is another main street of the city.
Following the “Graben” you will pass by a number of beautiful fountains and memorials like e.g. the Plague column.
Several smaller shops give this area a traditional, classic atmosphere. At the end of this street, turn left and after 2 minutes you´ll arrive at Michaelerplatz. There you find Hofburg Palace as well as the famous Cafe Demel on the opposite side of the square. Well, it seems that now there is the time to explore the Viennese cafe culture with its typical cafe houses and its thousands different ways of drinking coffee.

Hofburg Palace is the huge former seat of government of the monarchy. Nowadays, you find a number of museums there, the most famous ones being the Sisi museum, the crown jewels and the Museum of Ethnology. You can also take a look at the famous Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School or listen to a concert of the Vienna Boys' Choir.
If you wanna take a nice and interesting walk, just walk from Michaelerplatz through Hofburg Palace to the other side onto Heldenplatz, cross it and follow on to the two huge national museums on the opposite side: the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Fine Arts.

The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) consists of a collection of different museums and exhibitions; if you wanna chill out a bit, you could hang around in the inner courtyards of the art complex.

02:00 pm

From the MuseumsQuartier return to the Ring, pass by the Parliament on your left and eventually you will come to the City Hall.
During Christmas time, you will find a huge Christmas market here; during winter times, there is an ice skating rink and, during summer times, an open-air film festival , at which concerts and operas are being shown on a big screen in the park.
Following on the Ring, you will see the building of the University of Vienna.

02:30 pm

When you pass the University building, you will immediately come across a big tram and metro stop called “Schottentor”. Now just use the escalator to get down to the basement and from there take tram no. 38 (direction Grinzing).
If you go until the final stop of this tram, you will arrive at Grinzing.
Although being a part of the city of Vienna, the atmosphere is more like a typical small Austrian town. Here you gonna find the famous Austrian wine taverns (called “Heuriger”), where you can get the wine from the harvest in and around the city.
This is the perfect place to finish off a long day of sightseeing; just eat a famous Wiener Schnitzel, drink some wine and relax!
