Wombats - The Base Vienna - Chris

Name: Chris
Nationality: Austrian
Travel Destination: USA, North Africa, Europe
Languages: German, English, French

About me:

Hi!

I'm Chris. What can I tell you about myself?

I'm from Styria, a southern province of Austria, but I grew up in Lower Austria, the province surrounding Vienna. Tired of the Austrian Way of Life and curious for something new I went to the US for a year to study. There I got the chance to see a lot of the country-side as well as a collection of big cities.

When I got back I moved to Vienna and started to study international economics which I'm still doing.

My hobbies involve sports, hanging out with friends, work as a volunteer for AFS – an organization promoting intercultural learning, party at the womBar and travel as much as possible. My recently visited destinations were Sweden, Finland, Germany and Poland. This summer I'll be travelling to Luxembourg, through France and the Czech Republic.

How I got to be a part of Wombats?
After being a regular guest at the womBar (still a hobby of mine) I decided to apply for a job at the reception to make sure that I could still meet people from all over the world which is by the way the most fun in this job. Other than that I can just tell you how much I enjoy to be part of a great team and a great hostel!

Although I've seen a few places around the world, Austria seems like a very good place to be. Vienna is a beautiful city, so if you get the chance, come and visit us! And when you're here and you have a question, then just come down to the reception desk and ask ;)

Have fun & travel safely
Chris

About me:
German girl in vienna... or, how I fell in love with a whole city.

5 years ago my feet lead me to vienna for the very first time; after 2 weeks of staying (I intended to come for 3 days...) I drove home, packed my stuff and decided to live here for the next years. The people, the living history, culture, the enormous good coffee, ah... everything... I fell in love with this city.

Besides my job at the hostel I'm studying history at the University of Vienna. My hobbies are music, movies, literature, people, computers/IT, dreaming, thinking, travelling, speaking and to bounce....
Since my earliest days I travelled to different places all over the world (my parents were enthusiastic travellers... and I share that :-) I think that the experiences that I could make on these trips shaped my life and made me more open-minded and curious of the unknown.

Interested in people from different cultures and travelling, the job at wombats is one of the best I ever had. I really enjoy to explain and explore the city with people from all over the world; if you need some good recommendations, just visit me at the reception desk ;-)

About me:

Now this is the story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there and I’ll tell you the story how I became… well, receptionist at Wombat’s.

Originally I’m from Vienna, but I moved to Lower Austria. I started at Wombat’s for a internship, kept coming back and now that I finished school I’m staying here until my alternative civilian service as paramedic starts.

About me… I’m quite sporty, I practice several martial arts and I love mountain-biking and skiing. I’m working a lot with computers during my leisure time, but also like to read. My favourite type of music is anything from Rage Against The Machine to Heavy-Metal. I’m a member of the volunteer fire-brigade and I’m the youngest member of the wom-family.

My travel experience so far:
Several weeks with host families in Ireland, France and Spain. I’ve also been to many places in southern Europe and all over Austria.
My next aim is to travel through the Scandinavians with some friends.

I really like this job here, you get to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world and the staff is just great.
I’m looking forward to meeting you here in this beautiful city,

Take care
Stefan

About me:

Slightly escaped some obese polar foxes in the epic year of 1984, I - all of a sudden - found myself in the middle of picturesque Bohemian Vienna, which I left a few times, but always returned.

Still reclining on Alma Mater's dignified chest, I've been working in Ireland and France, traveling through Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania and currently planning to (slowly) take over the world's supremacy. (don't tell anyone!)

As I lived (yes.) in several (pretty horrible) hostels all over Europe, I'm glad to be a member of the Wombat's team, that makes me feel like being part of this huge and fabulous traveling community.

Things you should definitely check out in Vienna:

Going-out

.) Rosa Lila Villa (http://www.villa.at/)
For the queeeer ones and those, likely to be - a political statement established in 1982 including a great bar (with decent guests and great food) and all the information about hot spots for gay/lesbian venues.

.) Fluc (www.fluc.at)
Artsyfartsy Fluc, situated in the dusty twilight of Praterstern, offering lectures, concerts, great atmosphere, (pretty) cheap drinks and a relaxed crowd.

Food/Drinks

.) WerkzeugH (http://www.werkzeugh.at/blog/uber-uns/)
Supersupersupersuper comfortable restaurant/bar with living-room atmosphere, build up out of a wide range of a seemingly random selection of antique furniture and great (and cheap) beer. Everyday they offer 2 or 3 different delightful meals. (I'm going to marry their cook, for sure.)

.) Café Servus (http://www.servus-cafe.at/)
Old traditional coffeehouse in the middle of the shopping empire (Mariahilfer-Street). Local food, really good coffee and newspapers all over.

Museums/Art
.) Leopold Museum (http://www.leopoldmuseum.org/)
First spot for 20th century Art. Kokoschka, Schiele, Klimt and regularly changing exhibitions on modern art. Also including the Leopold Café.
